Google learning to index SWF files. Still a long way to go.
Posted by igarciaoliver | Filed under General Information
I’ve learned thru google’s blog that, on a collaboration with Adobe, the google bot can now index text inside a SWF. Yahoo is also capable of this apparently, since they were also involved with Adobe during the research.
The post on googleblog doesn’t give a lot of details but there is also a post at google webmaster central which provides much more information but stills manages to leave the important points in the dark.
Google spiders run the SWF file and clicks everywhere much like a hot blooded visitor would. Whenever it captures text, it gets indexed, If it finds a link, it add the target to it’s “to-crawl” lists and will eventually index it too.
That the good part but there are still plenty of limitations and a lot to accomplish.

Presentation
Although this blog is pretended as a company or business blog I cannot overlook the need of a formal and personal presentation.
So here it goes.
My name is Ignacio García Oliver, I am a freelancer from Argentina focused mostly in Adobe Flash developments. I started in this line of work about 6 years ago and, looking at it from where I stand now, it has been a good experience.
My credentials sort of speak are far from this field. After a short period studying film directing, I switched the University of Buenos Aires to study Literature. I find literature fascinating and I cannot imagine a computer doing for me what a single page of prose or poetry can.
The mixture of literature and web programming came when, with a group of friends and fellow university students, we launched Segunda Poesía, a site mostly devoted to poetry, interviews with novel authors from the local scene and a phpBB2 forum. The project eventually faded into more calm waters but the interest for web development continued.
From that moment on, tech started to take more and more time of my day and turned into a sustainable and rewarding career. The list of clients did nothing but grow steadily with many recurrent partnerships formed over the years. From arty underground indie rock bands (I myself like to spend some time off the computer and into the drums to fight the carpal tunnel syndrome) to the Argentinian Supreme Court, from small country producers showing their handmade products globally for the first time to large multinational companies that use the web a primary sales force, my client and past experiences list is something I can look at with great joy.
After a year doing websites I decided to put a name to it and focus myself on this line of work: FLI WebDesign was then born.
My aim with this blog is to dump thoughts about my own and other people work and to write down my impressions on some relevant net events that pop up every once in a while.
Hope you all find my points of view interesting and feel free to drop a comment if something got you hooked up.
See you all later,
Ignacio García Oliver
